Sumi-E Japanese Painting, Black Ink on Paper, 2007.

The following paintings are studies of bamboo, landscapes, rocks, flowers, trees, and horses.  The paintings were created in order to mimic the traditional style of Sumi-E Japanese painting which uses black or colored ink on paper and rice paper.

I pay close attention to the positive and negative spaces, composition, and tonal range in each piece.  Also very important is the impact of the speed and direction of each brush stroke in the creation of each painting.
